Mass of the Christian burial for Gerald Raymond "Red" Promes of Carroll will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2009, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. Mr. Promes, 69, died Wednesday, April 8, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. The Rev. Richard Remmes will preside at the Mass. Lector will be the Rev. Michael Fitzsimmons. Pianist will be Marci Anderson, soloist will be John Wagner and cantor will be Marilyn Foley. Gift bearers will be Mr. Promes' grandchildren: Tyler, Zach and Elizabeth. Casket bearers will be Dave Fisher, Ron Clausen, Brian Miler, Paul Walkup, Don Nepple and Hank Beyerink. Burial with military honors by the Carroll American Legion will be in Carroll Cemetery. Visitation starts at 2:30 and a rosary will be prayed at 3 Sunday afternoon at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. St. Lawrence Parish will hold a Christian wake service at 7 Sunday night at the funeral home. A son of Joe and Ida (Arens) Promes, he was born Feb. 28, 1940, at Wynot, Neb, and attended school there. Mr. Promes served in the Army at the Aberdeen (Md.) Proving Grounds from 1958 to 1960. He and Carol Huennekens were married Sept. 8, 1962, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wynot with the Rev. Saxon officiating. Mr. Promes was a linotype operator at The Daily Times Herald in Carroll then worked for LeRoy and Erv's Dozer service and Allied Van Lines. He started Promes Drainage Inc. in 1970 and did farm tiling and dirt excavation. He was in business with his son, Rick, until retiring and selling the business in 2005. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, board of directors member for Carroll Moose Lodge, member of the Carroll American Legion and former member of the Elks Club and Charles Carroll Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing and playing cards. Survivors include his wife, Carol, of Carroll; two sons: Rick Promes and wife Melissa of Carroll and Brad Promes of Carroll; three grandchildren: Tyler, Zach and Elizabeth; two brothers: Ervin Promes and wife Sharon of Carroll and Jerome Promes and wife Sally of Wynot; and a sister, Mildred Koch, and her husband, Erwin, of Wynot. Mr. Promes was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, John; a daughter, Karen, in 2006; a brother, Raynold Promes; and two sisters: Maryann Promes and Lucille Promes Arens.
