Gary Mendenhall

Gary Mendenhall, age 68, of Carroll, IA, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2020 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 4, 2021 at Central Church in Carroll with Pastor Ryan Gallegos officiating.  Casket bearers will be Gary’s family members.  Honorary casket bearers will members of the Ralston Fire Department.  Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.

Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll on Sunday from 5 – 7 P.M.  The casket will be moved to Central Church at 9:30 A.M. on Monday where visitation will resume until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Carroll Animal Rescue and may be left with the funeral home or at the church.

Those in attendance at Gary’s service are asked to abide by Covid – 19 guidelines and masks are required at the funeral home and at the church.

Gary was born on July 15, 1952 in Audubon, IA, and was the son of Homer and Ollivene (Merk) Mendenhall.  Gary was baptized at the Audubon United Methodist Church April 10, 1965.  He grew up in Audubon and graduated from Audubon High School in 1970.  Gary began working at Garst and Thomas Seed Company in 1973 where he worked for almost 40 years.  He was married to Marilyn Boss in June of 1973 and to this union was born a daughter Misty.   He was later remarried to Patti Heuton on June 3, 2012 and they made their home in Carroll.  Gary had served as Chief of the Ralston Fire Department for many years, and he volunteered with the Glidden First Responders and Fire Department for many years.  In retirement, Gary drove school bus for the Carroll Community School District and Central Church.  He enjoyed watching black and white movies and westerns, playing with his dogs Rio, Jessie, Piper, and Max, golfing, riding his Harley; and spending time with his family.

Gary is survived by his wife Patti of Carroll; daughter Misty Boes (Mike) of Carroll; Patti’s sons: Tyson Heuton of Des Moines and Nathan Heuton (Britney) of Carroll; four grandchildren: Kyla Boes, Olivia Boes, Francis Boes, and Kylie Heuton; two sisters: Marilyn Andreasen of Council Bluffs, IA, and Delores Rustvold (Roy) of Audubon; a brother Jeff Mendenhall of Springfield, MO; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Homer and Ollivene Mendenhall; and his brother Derald Mendenhall.
