Frederick George, son of Warren and Emma (Pevestorf) Long, was born November 29, 1916, on the family farm in Guthrie County, Iowa. He grew up south of Coon Rapids and attended country school at Handy School and White Rock through the eighth grade. He then farmed with his family during the depression. In September of 1942, Fred was inducted into the U. S. Army, served primarily in the European Theatre and was wounded in Italy, earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. In June of 1945, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class. Upon his return to Iowa, Fred continued farming with his family. On September 4, 1948, Fred was united in marriage with Evelyn Leinen at the Annunciation Rectory in Coon Rapids. Four children were born to this marriage. Fred and Evelyn made their home on various farms around Coon Rapids. In 1977, they retired and moved into Coon Rapids. Fred was a member of First United Methodist Church and the American Legion. Throughout the years, he enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodworking, going to dances, listening to country music and vacationing in the mountains of Colorado and Idaho. Farming was his first love. Most important to him was spending time with his family, especially for picnics and during the holidays. On Friday, September 9, 2011, Fred died at Friendship Home Audubon, Iowa, at the age of ninety-four. Fred is survived by his wife Evelyn Long of Coon Rapids; four children: Fred Long Jr. and wife Sandra of Jefferson; Marlene Long of Coon Rapids; Debbie Kult and husband Jerry of Coon Rapids and Lora Snyder and husband Larry of Halbur; seven grandchildren: Teresa Olson and husband Paul, Maria Wilson and husband Todd, Jennifer Tonko and husband Sean, Keegan Kult and wife Kimberly, Jessica Grote and husband Scott, Nicole Snyder and friend Grey Gust, and Robert Snyder; eight great-grandchildren: Phoebe, Siddha and Daphne Olson; Henning, Ula and Edy Tonko; and Ashlynn and Kayli Jo Grote; and a brother Earl Long of Coon Rapids.
