Eula Elsie Bender, age 98, of Glidden passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden with Rev. Dr. Michael Fitzsimmons of First Presbyterian Church in Carroll officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden from 5 – 7 P.M. on Monday evening. Organist for the service will be Mrs. Marlys Conner. Casket bearers will be John Peterson, Ross Hein, Joe Johnston, Jerry Hargens, Verlin Breon, and Kenny Owens. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.
Born on February 24, 1912 at Glidden she was the daughter of Albert and Una (Kern) Wentzel. Eula is a lifelong resident of Glidden where she attended school as a girl. She was married to Bernard Bender on February 26, 1930 in Glidden. The couple farmed south of Glidden for several years and later moved to Glidden and owned and operated the B&W Café. She did house cleaning for several families in Glidden and helped take care of their children. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glidden, the United Presbyterian Women, and several card clubs. In her spare time she enjoyed bird watching, spending time with family, and she loved children.
Surviving are her two children: Leland Bender (Phyllis) of Glidden, and Delores Breidert of Lake City; two grandchildren: Brenda Tomlin of Des Moines, and Jerry Breidert of Lidderdale; four great grandchildren: Benjamin Tomlin, Stephanie Breidert, Joseph Tomlin, and Michael Breidert. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and four sisters: Winifred Jacobs, Caroline Wentzel, Genevive Tuel, and Betty Ann in infancy.
