Eugene Arthur Vonnahme, age 68, of Carroll passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at St. John Paul II Parish – St. Lawrence Church in Carroll with Fr. Jose Shinoj as Celebrant. Gift bearers will be Bev and Al Brincks. Casket bearers will be Greg Vonnahme, Ron Vonnahme, Gary Vonnahme, Jed Vonnahme, Jon Vonnahme, and Jason Vonnahme. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors by the Breda American Legion.
Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday where there will be a Rosary at 5:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. Born on September 25, 1950 in Carroll, IA, he was the son of Raymond and Delores (Stevens) Vonnahme. Gene grew up Mt. Carmel and graduated from Kuemper High School in 1968. Following high school he was drafted into the United States Army and served two years during the Vietnam Conflict and earned the Purple Heart Medal of Honor for his service. Following his honorable discharge, Gene returned to Carroll and worked for the Pepsi Cola Bottling Plant. He was married to Charlene Boell on July 9, 1976 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll. He has worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier from 1990 until his retirement in 2015. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, the Breda American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans.
Gene is survived by his wife Charlene Vonnahme of Carroll; a son Dr. Greg Vonnahme and his wife Dr. Beth Vonnahme of Prairie Village, KS; a daughter Dr. Julie Vogel-Lemke and her husband Rich Lemke of Des Moines; four grandchildren: John and Gavin Vogel and Nate and Andy Vonnahme; his mother Delores Vonnahme of Carroll; his mother-in-law Violet Boell of Carroll; two brothers: Gary Vonnahme of Carroll and Ron Vonnahme and his wife Mary Lou of Dubuque, IA; two sisters-in-law: Bev Brincks and her husband Al of Carroll and Karen Seidel and her husband Rusty of Rockwell, IA; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gene was preceded in death by his father Raymond Vonnahme; his father-in-law William Boell; and a sister-in-law Joyce Vonnahme.
