Eugene “Gene” Bayer, age 77, of Glidden, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Born on January 13, 1932 at Willey, Iowa, he was the son of Joe and Anna (Zitzlsperger) Bayer. He grew up in the Willey – Dedham area and graduated from Carroll High School in 1950. He served for two years in the Army following high school during the Korean Conflict. He then lived in Glidden where he worked for a creamery as a route driver. He was married to Margaret Ginn on July 27, 1957 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll by Father Kollasch. He was employed by the Crouse Cartage Company for 23 years as a truck driver. Gene was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden and the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion and the South Side Country Club. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, cribbage, playing eucre, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife Margaret of Glidden, a daughter Kelly Hampton and her husband Jeff of Gretna, Nebraska; a daughter Lynn Neelans and her husband Paul of LaVista, Nebraska; a sister Vera Gute of Glidden; a sister Eva Jentzen of Carroll; a sister Rita Williams of Leon, Iowa; four grandchildren: Megan, Laura, Dan, and Erin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Harry and Russ Bayer.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Fr. Tiedeman as celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Monday where there will be a Christian Wake Service held at 7:00 P.M. Gift Bearers will be Jerry and Rita Mathine and Lector for the Mass will be Lynn Stork. Casket bearers will be Mike Bayer, Dale Moeller, Gary Burton, Dick Platt, Irv Promes, and Paul Walkup. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Military honors will be conducted by the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion of Glidden.
