Dean was born on November 9, 1945, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Virgil and Ida (Trafford) Boell. He grew up on the family farm near Carroll and spent his entire life living and working on that same land. He graduated from Carroll Community School in 1964 and attended Fort Dodge Community College.
A lifelong farmer, Dean took great pride in his work and cherished the land that sustained his family. In addition to farming, he drove semi-trucks for many years in the Carroll area, working for various trucking companies before retiring in 2021 due to the onset of Alzheimer’s.
Dean was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In his younger years, he was an avid hunter, later finding joy in simply observing wildlife and tending to his farm animals with his children and grandchildren. He also loved collecting rocks—a simple hobby that reflected his appreciation for nature’s quiet beauty. Above all, Dean treasured his family. His gentle spirit, steady presence, loyalty, and example of hard work, humility, and love will forever be remembered.
Dean is survived by his wife, Diane Boell of Carroll; his children and their families: Kraig Boell (Laura) of Lidderdale, Chris Boell (Tina) of Carroll, Jackie Boell of Ankeny, Eric Boell (Karen) of Carroll, Ryan Boell (Randi) of Carroll, and Brady Boell (Jodi) of Carroll; 20 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jan Mobley of Sacramento, CA; his in-laws: John Kennebeck (June) of Glidden, David Kennebeck (Sue) of Carroll, Donald Kennebeck (Irene) of Athens, IL, Dale Kennebeck (Bonny) of Carroll, Julie Gilland of Shelby, and Jean Lampe (Jeff) of Carroll; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Ida Boell; his in-laws, Joseph and Rita Kennebeck; a brother, Virgil Boell II; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Boell; two brothers-in-law, Doyle Gilland and John Mobley; a nephew, Danny Boell; and a grandson, Kelton Boell.
