Esther Erma Hulsebus

Esther Erma Hulsebus, age 91, of Carroll, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll. She was born August 10, 1921, at Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Lillie (Mohr) Seehusen. She grew up at Schleswig and graduated from Schleswig High School in 1940. On February 14, 1943, Esther was united in marriage with Vernon Hulsebus at the Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig. The couple farmed south of Denison and Esther worked at Crawford County Memorial Hospital. In 1968, they moved to Carroll where Esther was a stay-at-home mom and worked at New Hope Village. Vernon died November 28, 1997. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed volunteering, sewing, gardening, and playing cards with friends. She and Vernon also enjoyed fishing and camping and were members of a camping club. Funeral services will be 11AM, Friday, December 28, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Carroll, with Reverend Dennis Bailey officiating. Visitation will be from 4 PM to 7 PM on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Visitation will resume on Friday at 9 AM at the Church. Esther’s grandchildren will serve as her casket bearers. Interment and Graveside service will be at 2 PM, Friday, December 28 at Union Township Cemetery in Defiance. Esther is survived by her children: Judy Hintz of Denison; Jeanne Gehling and husband Brian of Carroll; Jack Hulsebus and wife Rhonda of Maquoketa; and Jim Hulsebus of Carroll; a son-in-law Jim Scheuerman of Boxholm; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister Mary Ellen Gerberick of Huntington Beach, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter Jan Scheuerman and a son-in-law Verdell Hintz.
