Esther Maxine Hughes, age 81, of Glidden, Iowa passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa. Born on June 21, 1927 at Logan, Iowa, she was the daughter of Fred and Edna (Stephens) Shelton. In her youth Esther attended rural schools and graduated from Logan High School in 1946. She received her normal school certificate and was employed at the Linwood rural school. She was married to Calvin Hughes on June 28, 1946 at the Christian Church parsonage in Logan by Rev. Akin. The couple was blessed with two sons. She was a housewife and mother who enjoyed crafts, camping, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed her job as a cook at the Glidden-Ralston School. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glidden and the Presbyterian Women. She had served as a Deacon in her church. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors while living in Logan and the American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband Calvin of Glidden; a son Craig Hughes and his wife Donna of Laurel, Iowa; a daughter-in-law Carol Hughes of Tallahassee, Florida; seven grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, a son Clinton Hughes in 1994, and brothers: Harold Shelton, Fred Shelton, and Mervin Shelton, a sister Clara Shelton, and a granddaughter Monica Sue Hughes. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Glidden with Rev. Dr. Michael Fitzsimmons officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday to lie in state until the time of service. Burial will be at Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.
