Emil “Gene” Johnson, age 73, of Carroll, IA, passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Brian Licht officiating. Organist for the service will be Ellen Severin and soloist will be Marv Toft. Casket bearers will be Richard Brotherson, Travis Brotherson, Tyler Hoffmann, Jacob Johnson, Todd Anderson, and John Hoffmann. Honorary casket bearers will be Justin Hoffmann, Kylie Johnson and Samantha Johnson. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home after 5:00 P.M. on Friday where there will be a prayer service held at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born January 21, 1945 in Jefferson, IA, he was the son of Emil and LaVerne (Karber) Johnson. He grew up in Jefferson where he graduated from high school in 1963. Following high school he worked for several local farmers as well as McAtee Motors in Jefferson. Gene began working for Heider Manufacturing in Carroll in 1966. He was married to Carolyn Martens on August 13, 1966 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll by Pastor Kieck. Gene and Carolyn made their home in Carroll where they raised their two children Karen and Ron. Gene worked for IBP in Denison for several years before becoming an over the road truck driver for Mid-Continent Trucking where he worked until his retirement in 2014. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll. He was a member Carroll Municipal Golf Course where he golfed on the Sr. Men’s League. Gene enjoyed gardening, camping, Jigsaw puzzles, traveling and going on cruises. He was an avid golfer and Minnesota Vikings fan, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. Gene is survived by his wife Carolyn of 52 years of Carroll; his daughter Karen Hoffmann (John) of Dunlap, IA; his son Ronald Johnson (Angie) of Carroll; five grandchildren: Justin Hoffmann (fiancé Shanna Wettleson) of Dunlap, Kylie Johnson of West Des Moines, Tyler Hoffmann of Manning, Samantha Johnson of Carroll, and Jacob Johnson of Carroll; his mother-in-law Marrola Martens of Carroll; a sister-in-law Donna Brotherson (Richard) of Breda; and a nephew Travis Brotherson (Kristi) of Holstein, IA. Gene was preceded in death by his parents Emil and LaVerne Johnson; his father-in-law Leonard Martens; a nephew Scott Brotherson; and a grandson Jason Hoffmann in 2012.
