Elmer John Peters, age 97, of Glidden passed away on Friday, September 30, 2016 at Regency Park Nursing Home in Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Glidden with Rev. Lorinda Hoover officiating. Organist for the service will be Doris Bentley and soloist will be Mary Ross. Casket bearers will be Dan Braden, Jim Irlmeier, Dennis Conner, Clark Conner, Clair Conner, and Joshua Holmes. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden with military honors by the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion of Glidden. Friends may call from 5 – 7 P.M. on Monday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden where there will be a prayer service held at 6:30 P.M. followed by a Masonic Memorial Service The casket will be moved to the church at 9:30 A.M. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Glidden United Methodist Church or the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion and may be left at the funeral home or the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden and online condolences may be left for Elmer’s family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on July 1, 1919, Elmer was the son of Derk and Maggie (Bush) Peters. He attended rural schools and furthered his education with night classes and private music lessons. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church (ELCA) which at that time was located in Grant Township. Elmer was drafted in the military in 1942, serving 45 months in the U.S. Army with the Medical Dept. of the #356 Searchlight Battalion. The unit was stationed in the Pacific and spent time in Guadalcanal and the Philippines. He was called back to active duty during the Korean Conflict and served with the 10th Station Hospital in Pusan, Korea. Elmer was united in marriage to Hazel Luella Conner, December 31, 1954, at the Presbyterian Church in Glidden. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as clerk and postmaster for the Glidden Post Office. He was a member of the Glidden United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for more than 50 years. Elmer was a 70-year member of the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion in Glidden. Other memberships include Haggai Masonic Lodge, Postal Service organizations, NARFE, Senior Citizens, RSVP, the Carroll Elks Men’s Chorus and other musical groups, and the Democratic Party. His hobbies included gardening, yard work and traveling. He kept in touch with and helped organize reunions with his Army buddies and their families, a group that met regularly for nearly 50 years. He enjoyed classical music and treasured hearing perforances at Carnegie Hall and the Vienna Opera House. He filled-in as organist when needed at his church and played for many weddings and funerals for aunts, uncles and cousins in the extended Peters family. Elmer is survived by two daughters: Margaret (Barry) Holmes of Mineral Wells, TX, and Phyllis Peters (Geoff Abelson) of Ames, IA; one grandson, Joshua (Angie) Holmes and great-grandson, Cayden, of Mineral Wells, TX; a sister, Ruth Meister of Lake View, Iowa; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Hazel, Dec. 21, 2010; and his parents.
