Duane Shadle

William “Duane” Shadle, age 82, of Carroll, IA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at his home in Carroll.

A prayer service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Chaplain Angelo Luis officiating.  Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden.

Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5 – 7 P.M. on Wednesday prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Sauk Rail Trail and may be left with the funeral home.

Duane was born on November 12, 1938 in Lytton, IA, and he was the son of Forest and Ora (Summers) Shadle.  He grew up on his family’s farm southwest of Lytton and graduated from Lytton High School in 1956.  He attended Iowa Community College in Ft. Dodge. He was married to Saundra Gebhardt on October 8, 1966 at the Presbyterian Church in Sac City.  The couple farmed southeast of Glidden where they raised their two sons.  Duane retired from farming in 2002 and they moved to Carroll.  In retirement, Duane worked for Carroll Cleaning Supply and did volunteer work at New Hope Village.  While living in Glidden he was a member of First Presbyterian Church and he became a member of First United Methodist Church after moving to Carroll.  Duane was a friendly and outgoing person who thoroughly enjoyed giving his friends a hard time.  He was helpful, fun loving, and very detail oriented; always getting any task done promptly.  He enjoyed planting Purple Wave Petunias south of the condo, traveling, Drake basketball and the Des Moines Symphony.  He and Saundra rode many bike trails to enjoy nature, and they just celebrated 55 years of marriage on October 8.  He gave lots of fatherly advice to his sons, followed with laughter and “be sure to watch the weather!!”

Duane is survived by his wife Saundra of Carroll; his two sons and their families: Blaine Shadle (DeShanna) of Waverly, IA, and Collin Shadle (Rachel) of Cedar Falls, IA; five grandchildren: Emilie Kafer (David) of Clarksville, IA, Aubrey Bonefas of Evansdale, IA, Jalen Stovall of Waverly, IA, Penelope Shadle and Finn Shadle both of Cedar Falls, IA.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents Forest and Ora Shadle; Saundra’s parents Herbert and Ruth Gebhardt; and his brother Lowell Shadle.
