Duane William Hannasch

Duane William Hannasch, age 96, of Carroll, IA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny, IA, with his wife and daughter holding his hand.

Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, May 23, 2025 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll with Fr. Patrick Behm as Celebrant.  Lectors for the Mass will be Allison Koontz and Laura Reis.  Gift bearers will be Duane’s great-grandchildren.  Eucharistic minister will be Tom Day.  Casket bearers will be Duane’s eight grandchildren.  Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.

Visitation will be held at Holy Spirit Church from 9:30 – 10:15 A.M. prior to the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. John II Parish, Kuemper High School Foundation, or Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Parish in Ankeny.

Duane was born on November 24, 1928 on his family’s farm near Templeton, IA.  He was the son of Edward and Anna (Wuebker) Hannasch. Duane grew up in Carroll and attended Carroll High School.  He began working for the Carroll Daily Times Herald at age 15.  Duane was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War and served from 1951 – 1953.  During his military service, he was married to Anita Koster on May 21, 1951 at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Breda by Fr. Bruch.  Duane continued working at the Carroll Daily Times Herald for over 40 years.  He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish.  Duane enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and riding his bicycle over ten thousand miles.

Duane is survived by his wife Anita of Carroll and currently of Ankeny; a son Douglas Hannasch of Oelwein; four daughters: Sr. LuAnn Hannasch R.S.M. of Omaha, Cynthia Day (Tom) of Fairfax, Marcia Krois (Dave) of Waukee, and Rebecca Hannasch of Ankeny; eight grandchildren: Laura Reis (Jon), Sarah MacLearn (Rory), Phillip Krois (Kay), Alyssa Fay, Allison Koontz (Jay), Krista Hansen, DPT (Andrew), Dr. Nicole Krois, DDS, and Ann Krois; fifteen great-grandchildren; a sister Lorene Mauro (Don) of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law: Myrna Schmidt (Van) of Three Forks, MT, and Alice Thielen of Carroll; a brother-in-law Dennis Schleisman of Carroll; and many nieces and nephews.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Anna Hannasch; his in-laws Clem and Hazel Koster; a sister Joan Schleisman; a brother Donald Hannasch and his wife Helen; and in-laws: Floyd Koster and his wife Terry, Pearl Staiert and her husband Irvin, Edgar Koster and his wife Delores, Elaine Bierl and her husband Otmar, Father Dale Koster, Alma Schroeder and her husband Ivan, Urban Koster and his wife Patricia, Helen Bertrand and her husband Lee, Jerome Koster and his wife Jean, Norma Jean Ludwig and her husband Romaine, and Frank Thielen.
