Duane was born on July 4, 1934 in Carroll County on his family’s farm south of Coon Rapids. He was the son of Russell and Jessie (Webber) Carpenter. Duane grew up on the farm and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1953. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army and served two years. Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to Coon Rapids and was married to Bethel Johnston on August 16, 1958 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids.  The couple made their home in Coon Rapids and Duane worked for the Garst and Thomas Seed Company until he was in his mid 40’s and then began farming and selling seed. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids, the Coon Rapids Masonic Lodge, and the Coon Rapids American Legion. Duane enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the Iowa State Fair, building and repairing most anything, but most of all he loved to spend time with his family and grandchildren.  Duane was also very proud of the thousands of chickens he raised over the years.

Duane is survived by his wife Bethel of 61 years; his son Richard Corson (Ann) of Coon Rapids; two grandchildren: Mandi Lucas (Tommy) of Ankeny and Jared Corson of Carroll; two great-grandchildren: Tanner and Olivia; and several nieces and nephews.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents Russell and Jessie Carpenter; his mother and father-in-law Joe and Viva Johnston; three brothers: Donald, David, and Darrell; and a sister Madelyn Hickman.
