Dr. Kenneth E. Shibata, age 89, of Carroll passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 A.M. on Friday, November 4, 2016 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Craig Collison and Fr.Timothy Schott Concelebrating. Lectors for the Mass will be Shirley Molitor and Vern Henkenius. Music for the Mass will be by Kate Cuddy, the St. Lawrence Choir with Michelle Phillips as Cantor, and the RSVP Singers. Gift Bearers will be Ken’s great grandchildren Preston and Lucas Noll, and Claire Elizabeth Womack. Eucharistic Ministers will be Shirley Molitor and Bonnie Danner. Casket Bearers will be Phill Phillips, Mark Beardmore, Steve Sander, Dr. David Martin, Diane “Pudy” Pudenz, Dennis Molitor, Lynn Pudenz and Sue Graff. Military honors will be given at the church by the Carroll American Legion. Burial will be at a later date. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a Rosary at 5:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Catholic Church at 10:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. After the birth of Ken, Sophia passed away and he was raised by his aunt and uncle Frank and Helen Kokes in Ord, NE, whom he called Mom and Dad. Ken graduated from Ord High School in 1945. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1945–1947. Ken attended Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney, NE where he played football and served as mayor of the Veteran’s Village. Ken received a B.A. in Education in 1950, his Masters Degree in 1958, his Doctorate in 1965, and did post graduate work at Harvard University. Ken’s career in education spanned forty-two years at the public elementary, secondary, university, and community college levels. From 1950–1955 he was Principal, Instructor and Coach at Silver Creek Public School in Silver Creek, NE, from 1955–1960 he was Superintendent, Instructor, and Coach at Clearwater Public School in Clearwater, NE, from 1955–1960 he was High School Principal at Albion High School in Albion, NE, in 1964 he served as Executive Director on the Nebraska Committee for Children and Youth in Lincoln, NE, from 1965–1966 he was Operations Director and Coordinator for the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE, from 1967–1970 he was the Director of Instructional Services for ESU #6 in Milford, NE, from 1970–1971 he was the Dean of Instruction at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL and from 1971–1983 was Executive Vice President, from 1983–1985 he was Executive Vice President of Educational Services for Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny, IA, from 1985–1987 he was CEO of the Des Moines Area Community College Campus in Carroll, IA, and from 1987–1992 he was President of Southeast Community College in Beatrice, NE. Ken retired in 1992 and moved back to Carroll. He was married to Maria da Piedade Ribeiro Coelho on July 4, 1977 in Chicago. Ken and Maria lived in many locations in the United States and had a vacation home near Maria’s family in Portugal. In retirement Ken served as Mayor Pro-tem on the Carroll City Council for six years. Ken volunteered for many organizations including: Hospice, Congregate Meals, RSVP, the Speak Up Program, and the American Red Cross. He served on the Kuemper Catholic Elementary School Board and volunteered as a part time instructor. He was an active member of St. Lawrence Parish where he served with the Children’s Liturgy Program, was coordinator of the Welcome Your Child Program, and served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of AARP, the Carroll Knights of Columbus, the Carroll American Legion, Serra Club, Rotary International and the Carroll Rotary Club. Ken is survived by his wife Maria of Carroll; four sons: Rick Shibata (Maryjo) of Lincoln, NE, Ron Shibata (Linda) of Dallas, TX, Dennis Shibata of Portland, OR, and Kenny Shibata of Ames, IA; a sister Gladys Gogan of Ord, NE; two granddaughters: Annemarie Shibata (Eric Noll) of Omaha, NE and Melissa Womack (Tim) of Kansas City, MO; a grandson Anthony Shibata (Cortny) of Ft. Collins, CO; four great grandchildren: Preston, Lucas, Christopher, and Claire Elizabeth; and great grandson baby Edward on the way. Ken is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Dalia Coelho and Marina Coelho, and many nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his aunt and uncle: Frank and Helen Kokes, his mother and father-in-law: Antonio and Maria Coelho, two sisters Garnie Dilla (George) and Gracie O’Connor (Robert), and two brothers-in-law Antonio Ribeiro Coelho and Fernando Ribeiro Coelho.
