Dr. James P. Jensen, age 81, of Milford, Iowa, and formerly of Carroll, died on Friday, April 21, 2017, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, following a brief illness. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22, at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Father Timothy Schott officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. Music for the service will be by Robert Schmidt as soloist accompanied by Lois Schmidt. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Kumper Education Foundation or the Carroll High School Foundation and may be left at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com. Dr. Jensen was born on March 24, 1936, in Waterloo, Iowa. He was the youngest of three children born to Jens Peter and Karen Margaret Jensen. He grew up in Waterloo and graduated in 1954 from Waterloo East High School. He attended Iowa State Teachers College from 1954-1956, then transferred to St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He graduated from St. Olaf with degrees in chemistry and physiology. Then he attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, and graduated with a master’s degree in education in 1960. From 1961 to 1966, he taught chemistry and physics at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. In 1970, he graduated from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine specializing in general family practice and obstetrical care. After completing his internship in Flint, Michigan, he moved to Glidden, Iowa, where he practiced for three years before joining the Carroll Medical Center in June 1975. Dr. Jensen was a devoted consummate teacher displaying compassion, professionalism, and a strong work ethic providing care to patients and families throughout Carroll County for 35 years. He retired in 2007 and moved to Okoboji, Iowa. There he relaxed and enjoyed the changing seasons. He married Darlene (Lohmeyer) in August 1961 in Waterloo. Together they had four children. Dr. Jensen is survived by his wife, Darlene; four children: Dr. Eric (Karen) Jensen of Carroll (where Eric serves as mayor); Holly Jensen of Milford, Iowa; Renee (Tim) Wernimont of Jacksonville, North Carolina; and Sarah (Paul) Shomshor of Council Bluffs, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Soren and Arrington Jensen; Lauren, Katie, and James Wernimont; Jensen and Jacksen Shomshor; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Jean Elizabeth Schmidt and Katherine Louise Borchardt.
