Dorothy C. Wheeler, age 93, of Glidden, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, June 29, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church in Glidden with Rev. Brian Camara officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Marlys Conner. Casket bearers will be grandsons: Brian Wheeler, Ryan Wheeler, Todd Wheeler, Jeff Wheeler, Tim Kramer, Nick Davis, Trevor Bell, and Greg Besch. Honorary casket bearers will be Dorothy’s granddaughters. Burial will be in the Wheatland Township Cemetery near Breda.
Born on March 6, 1919 on her family’s farm south of Wall Lake, Iowa. She grew up near Wall Lake and graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1937. She was married to Lloyd Wheeler on January 11, 1939 at Wheatland Presbyterian Church near Breda. The couple farmed various farms near Wall Lake and Breda and moved to Glidden in 1962. Dorothy worked as a dental assistant at the Glidden and Carroll Dental Clinics for eight years and she was the secretary for the Carroll County Public Health Nurse for 10 years. Dorothy moved to Westwood Knolls in Carroll in 2007. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Glidden, the Presbyterian Women, she taught Sunday School, she was chairman of the Wheatland Presbyterian Women while living in Wall Lake, and she was a member of Entre Nous, Eldeen Club, and Rosemary Club. Dorothy enjoyed playing Canasta, Pinochle, and Skip Bo. Over a span of 16 years, Dorothy attended all of her son’s Wall Lake and Glidden football Games and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Football fan.
Dorothy is survived by three sons: Gary Wheeler and his wife Dianna of Johnston, Iowa, Neil Wheeler and his wife Diane of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dean Wheeler of Urbandale, Iowa; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Lois Wheeler of Stockton, California; two brother-in-law C.K. Akin of Cherokee, Iowa and Guy Wood of Alden, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd in 1991, a son Danny in 1976, an infant daughter Nadine in 1943, three sisters: Martha Gerdes, Margaret Sommer, and Emmaline Schoneboom and one brother Frederick Schoneboom.
