Dorothy Samples, age 93, of Winona, Missouri and formerly of the Scranton - Coon Rapids area passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Birch Tree Place in Birch Tree, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, November 17, 2017 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Pastor Rick Hamilton of Grace Baptist Church in Glidden officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Born on April 9, 1924 near Ralston, Iowa, Dorothy was the daughter of Martin and Alpha (Anderson) Rungee. She grew up in the Ralston – Scranton – Coon Rapids area and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1942. Dorothy worked as a motel maid and in a shoe warehouse before she was married to Clyde Samples on May 29, 1942 in Maryville, MO. Clyde was a Baptist minister and together the couple served congregations in the Winona and Mountain View, Missouri area. Clyde and Dorothy raised several of Clyde’s nieces and nephews. Dorothy an expert at quilting, an avid gardener, and loved fishing and canning. She seldom purchased store bought goods and made most all of her food from scratch and her clothing as well. She was dearly loved by all of her nieces and nephews and considered them all her children. Dorothy is survived by a sister-in-law Mae Shockley of Winona, MO; a sister-in-law Grace Straight of Ft. Dodge, IA; a brother-in-law Merle Samples of Ellisnore, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Gladys Long (Paul); her brother Floyd Rungee (LaVonne); and her husband Clyde Samples in 2015.
