Dorothy Spencer Anneberg
Dorothy Anneberg, age 94, died early Saturday, March 8, 2008, at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Carroll, with the Reverend Mike Fitzsimmons officiating. Sally Patten will serve as organist and Skip Raridon will be the vocalist. Following services, entombment will take place at Carroll City Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 18, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 AM on Wednesday to lie in state until the time of service.
Dorothy Elizabeth Spencer Anneberg was born in Iowa City on February 22, 1913. She was the daughter of LeRoy and Verna Moulton Spencer. She attended University Elementary School through sixth grade and Iowa City Junior High and High Schools, graduating as valedictorian in 1930. Her freshman and sophomore years in college were spent at Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri, and she graduated from the University of Iowa in Iowa City in 1934 with a BA degree in French and English. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta social sorority. Following graduation, Mrs. Anneberg attended summer school in Library Science at the University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana, Illinois.
Mrs. Anneberg was on the library staff of Stephens College for a year and then served as librarian at the University of Iowa Memorial Library in Iowa City.
On September 6, 1936, she married Dr. Paul Anneberg at the Christian Church in Iowa City. In July of 1937 they moved to Detroit, Michigan where she was a technical assistant librarian at the School of General Studies, Wayne University. She and Dr. Paul moved to Carroll in the fall of 1941 when Dr. Anneberg joined his father’s medical group, Drs. Anneberg and Martin.
Until recently Mrs. Anneberg was active in the First Presbyterian Church, Carroll. At various times she served as a member of the Session, Trustees, Deacons, Library Committee, Church Nominating committee, president of the Women in 1973, and was a Northwest Iowa Presbytery board member in the 1970’s. She joined P.E.O. in 1943 and was a longtime member of Clio Club. Mrs. Anneberg was especially interested in art history and music, and since 1980, her favorite hobbies were genealogy and travel. She was recently honored as a 75-year member of Kappa Alpha Theta.
Mrs. Anneberg was active in the Carroll chapter of the American Field Service program, serving as host mother to Marianne van Schaik of Zeist, Holland during the 1958-59 school year. She and Dr. Paul also hosted Marianne’s brother, Robert, for several months in 1970. Marianne died in 1977.
Mrs. Anneberg is survived by her four children: Paul David Anneberg and his wife Dorrie of Des Moines, Bethany Anneberg Cooper and husband Dan of Buena Vista, Colorado, Spencer Kivits Anneberg and his wife, Merrilee of Greeley, Colorado, and Dr. A. Lee Anneberg and his wife Alice of Denver, Colorado; eleven grandchildren: Julie Cooper Bliemel of Chatham, New Jersey, Alisa Anneberg Dean of Austin, Texas, Clayton Daniel Cooper of Maumelle, Arkansas, Kirstin Anneberg Knight of West Des Moines, Roy Dunlop Anneberg of Denver, Amy Spicer Anneberg of Santa Clarita, California, Kenneth Spencer Anneberg of Santa Clarita, Christine Hansen Anneberg of Hanover, New Hampshire, Lauren Juel Anneberg of Tagong, China, Drew Allen Anneberg of Denver, and Blake Spencer Anneberg of Edinburgh, Scotland; and six great grandchildren: Alec Jackson Bliemel, Joss Connor Dean, Marc Felix Bliemel, Abigail Frances Cooper, Emily Elizabeth Cooper, and Caden Bryce Dean.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Paul.
