Doris F. Tolsdorf, age 97, of Scranton passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Greene County Long Term Care in Jefferson. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, October 2, 2015 at the Scranton United Methodist Church with Pastor Joyce Webb officiating. Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday evening. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes and soloist will be Chad Stevens. Casket bearers will be Doris’ Grandsons: Michael Bappe, Edward Bappe, Andrew Bappe, Jeffrey Tolsdorf, Christopher Janssen, Scott Tolsdorf, Jeremy Gallentine, Brian Sugrue,, and Ed Sugrue, Jr.. Honorary casket bearers will be Granddaughters: Sheryl Montabon, Kelley Grossman, Amanda Roberts, and Kimberly Dalmadge. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Doris’ name, and memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church. Born on May 4, 1918 on her family’s farm near Scranton, she was the daughter of Hallie and Ina (Reeder) Augustus. She grew up in the Scranton area and graduated from Scranton High School in 1935. She attended one year of normal teacher’s training at the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and then taught country school at Kendrick Township #5. She was married to Edward Tolsdorf on October 22, 1938 at the Methodist church parsonage in Scranton. The couple lived on a farm west of Scranton for two years before moving to a farm south of Scranton in Willow Township. Doris and Ed moved into Scranton in 1959. Doris then worked as a cook at the high school and later as the school principal’s secretary. They were members of First Lutheran Church in Scranton until its closing and then joined the Scranton United Methodist Church. In her younger years, Doris was a 4–H leader and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the U Go I Go Club and the Red Hat Society. Doris enjoyed quilting, sewing, reading, and going to coffee and out to eat with friends. Doris is survived by three daughters: Judy Bappe and her husband Larry of Bella Vista, AK, Jane Gallentine and her husband Richard of Conrad, IA, and Sharon Tolsdorf and her husband Edward Sugrue of Brewster, MA; two sons: James Tolsdorf of Johnston, IA, and Thomas Tolsdorf and his wife Margaret of Scranton; thirteen grandchildren; twenty seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edward in 1960, a brother Edward and his wife Barbara, and a daughter-in-law Ann Tolsdorf.
