Doris Mae Kennebeck was born on October 31, 1934 in Carroll, Iowa to William and Josephine Kennebeck. She was raised on a farm with her nine siblings.  Doris attended the all-girl boarding school, St. Angela Academy in Carroll, and graduated from Glidden High School in 1952. While roller skating in Carroll, Doris met Bill Bruggeman.  On January 8, 1953 they married and they enjoyed 66 years together.  They enjoyed dancing at the Lakewood Ballroom, meeting friends at the Swizzle Stick, eating out at the Lidderdale Country Store, and they both enjoyed a good hayrack ride and many a barn party. Bill and Doris did life alongside their best friends, Darlene and the late Bob Onken.

Following their wedding and Bill’s active military service, the couple farmed.  Together, they raised cattle, hogs, chickens, corn, beans, horses, hay, and four children-- Sheila, Brenda, Cathy and baby brother, Brett.

Doris took pride in her Century Farm (2016), yard, home, garden and her kids. Doris enjoyed shopping, visiting with friends and neighbors, having coffee, bird watching, decorating her home (and then re-decorating it again 2 months later), working in the yard, and gardening.  Her favorite flowers include zinnias, sunflowers, Boston ferns, and the latest addition to her large garden were coneflowers. Doris also worked for Meyers Hardware Store in Lake City for many years.

Doris enjoyed her 13 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. She framed all of their artwork that included scribbles, barns, cows, tractors, and abstracts. She sent special newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and handwritten notes to keep in touch.  The grandkids most looked forward to Grandma’s hot dogs hot off the grill and summer days with her in the yard.  She and Bill loved calling the kids on their birthdays and celebrating all the big and little things in life. Doris' last family get together was at the farm sale in summer 2021. It was a good day.  Doris took comfort in her faith and in the Lord’s Prayer.  She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale, Iowa.

Doris left to tend Heaven’s gardens on February 11, 2022. Left behind are her four children: Sheila (the late Mark) Remsburg, Brenda (Clark) Johnson, Cathy (Mark) Lietz, and Brett (Kelly) Bruggeman. She will be missed by special friend, Darlene Onken and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren including: Heather (Guthrey) Fritz and two daughters, Grace and Maya; Holly (Joe III) Coppola and three children, Joey IV, Maddox and Saylor; Jeffrey (Aubree) Remsburg and two children, Lettie and Arlo; Adam (Amanda) Johnson and one son, Brantley; Jill (Jeff) Brock and their three children, Hadley, AnnaBeth and Bowen; Ashley (Dean) Smith and three children, Sophia, Sadler and Stella; Colby (Brandy) Winter and four children, Kypton, Braeya, Colewyn and Bennen; Jocelyn Lietz (Mike) and two daughters, Jaylee and Blakelynn; Jordan Lietz (fiancé Shelby); and Morgan, Benjamin (Laura), Madison, and Abby Bruggeman.  She leaves behind siblings, Mary Jane Bernholtz, Ruth Ann Snyder and Bud Kennebeck, and in-laws Carlyss (John) Heuton, and Stan Grundmeier.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Josephine Kennebeck; husband Bill Bruggeman; son-in-law Mark Remsburg and siblings Paul (Marie) Kennebeck, Chuck (Louise) Kennebeck, Earl (Vera) Kennebeck, Fred (Norma) Kennebeck, Florence (Marvin) Snyder, Janice Hinners (Larry Hinners) and Gayleen Kennebeck; and in-laws, Joan Fethkenher (Don Fethkenher); Karen Grundmeier; Rudell Snyder, Dale Bernholtz.

This spring, as you plant your own garden or flowers, the family asks that you plant a seed for Doris.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. “For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations” – Isaiah 61:11
