Doris Jean Brown, age 89, of Carroll, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, November 12, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Carroll with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday to lie in state until the time of service. Casket bearers will be Greg Banks, James Brown, Doug Steinkamp, and Jennifer Teems. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Born on January 19, 1921 at Omaha, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Chester and Hattie (Long) Chantry. She grew up in Harlan and Casey, Iowa, and graduated from Casey High School as valedictorian of her class in 1938. She then attended and graduated from Simpson College in Indianola in 1940 also as class valedictorian. She taught school in Webb, Iowa for two years. She then entered the United States Army in 1942 and served three years in the W.A.C.’s. She was married to James Douglas Brown on May 13, 1944 at Ft. Brag, North Carolina. The couple then moved to Manitou Springs, Colorado, and lived in several locations before moving to Carroll in 1962. She was employed by Peters Motors which later became Lou Walsh Motors and she retired in 1990. Doris was a member of First United Methodist Church in Carroll where she was active in United Methodist Women and various church activities. She was an active member of the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Foster Grandparent’s Program.
Surviving are her daughter Bonnie Jensen and her husband Scott of Carroll; two sons: Bill Brown and his wife Alice of Carroll, and Bob Brown and his wife Kathy of Glidden; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Maryann Chantry of Atlantic, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1967, a sister Francis Winter, and two brothers: William Davis and James Chantry.
