Donald D. Stangl, age 79, of Carroll passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Brian Feller as Celebrant. Music for the Mass will be by Kate Cuddy and the St. Lawrence choir, with Marcy Anderson as cantor. Lector for the Mass will be Kara Stangl. Gift Bearers will be Steve and Lori Stangl. Casket bearers will be Nicholas Stangl, Derwin Gottsch, Rob Thelen, Pat Miller, and Jim Thelen. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors by the Arcadia American Legion. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Friday where there will be a Christian Wake Service held at 6:30 P.M. Visitation will resume at St. Lawrence Catholic Church at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to New Hope Village and may be left at the funeral home or the church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on August 10, 1936 in Carroll, he was the son of Clarence and Mildred (Vanderloo) Stangl. Don grew up in the Carroll area and graduated from Carroll High School in 1954. He was married to Myra A. Thelen on January 31, 1956 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda by Fr. Bruch. Don enlisted in the United States Army and served three years and was stationed in Toul, France. Myra moved to France along with Don and their son Steve was born while living there. After his military service they moved back to Carroll and he worked at Arnold Motor Supply retiring in 2001. Don and Myra have been very active in New Hope Village with their daughter Rhonda over the years. He also did volunteer work with the Carroll Food Pantry. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and the Arcadia American Legion Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and bicycling. Don is survived by his wife Myra of 60 years of Carroll; son Steve Stangl (Lori) of Omaha; daughter Rhonda of Carroll; grandson Nicholas (Lisa) of San Ramon, CA; granddaughter Kara of Omaha; two great granddaughters: Grace and Anna Stangl; two sisters: Shirley Gute of Carroll and Norma “Suzy” Frank of Des Moines; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Don was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Richard, and a son Rick Stangl in 1985.
