Donald IntVeld, age 64, owner and partner with his wife Pat of the Glidden Grocery Store in Glidden, Iowa for many years, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral Service will be at 1 PM Sat June 21, 2014 at the Glidden United Methodist Church in Glidden with Rev. Lorinda Hoover officiating. Organist for the service will be Mary Ross and Soloist will be Carl Wilburn singing Amazing Grace and God Knows My Name. The congregation will sing How Great Thou Art. Casket Bearers will be David IntVeld, Douglas IntVeld, Dale IntVeld, Dean IntVeld, Brian Shimon, Brian Ellefson, Nelson Shimon and Bruce Nelson. Honorary Casket Bearers will be all of Don’s grandchildren and Sheli Carter , Becky Racobs and Lenelle Larson and All Loyal Customers. Friends may call at the church from 5 to 8PM Friday where there will be a prayer service at 7PM. Merle Hay Post of the American Legion will form an honor guard at the church and give the Military Honors at the Grave. Interment will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery at Glidden. In Lieu of flowers the family suggests that friends may if they wish contribute to a Memorial fund established in memory of Don. Memorials may be left at the church or mailed to the family. Donald (Don) Eugene IntVeld was born on February 21, 1950 to Marten and Magdalena IntVeld of Bruce, SD. Don was raised on a farm with nine (9) siblings and attended country school through 8th grade. While attending high school in Estelline, SD, he worked as a carry-out boy and learned to cut meat at Ward's IGA. After graduating from high school in 1968, he worked in the meat department at Spies Super Value in Watertown, SD until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1969. Don was stationed in the states for one year where he started his service as a mess hall cook and was sent to Vietnam continuing his duties as a cook. Don was discharged from the army in March 1971. On July 31, 1971, Don married his high school sweetheart, Pat Nelson. Don managed the meat department in the Jack and Jill store in Arlington, SD and worked at Larson’s Locker before moving to Laurens, IA to manage the meat department at Don’s Foodland. He managed the meat department from 1972-1983; when the ownership changed, he was made the store manager at Joyce’s Foodstore until 1994. He moved to Abbotsford, WI to assist with reopening a grocery store, Buy for Less, from 1994-1995. Don spent one year as an assistant manager at Jubilee in Brandon, SD. In May 1996, Don and Pat bought the Glidden Grocery in Glidden, IA. Throughout Don’s life, in every community that he lived, his passion was to always serve the people. He loved the town and people of Glidden & was dedicated to pleasing everyone in every way he could. He is survived by his wife, Pat IntVeld of Glidden, IA, one son, Shane (Thea) IntVeld of Blue Grass, IA, two daughters, Sara (Brian) Thomas of Sioux Falls, SD, and Summer (Chad) Davis of Coon Rapids, IA, ten grandchildren: Hunter, Hayden, Hollis, and Harlan IntVeld, Mitchell, Maimie, and Elaine Thomas, and Bella, Noah, and Cora Davis, nine siblings: Dr. Joanne IntVeld, MD (Cook, MN), Dave (Sue) IntVeld (Bruce, SD), Doug ( Shirley) IntVeld (White, SD), Darris IntVeld (Cook, MN), Jan (Micheal) Sutherlin (St. Louis, MO), Judy (Mike) Kruse (Rogers, MN), Joyce (Chris) Holmes (Angora, MN), Dale IntVeld (New York State), and Dean IntVeld (Brooking, SD), along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws, Willie and Elaine Nelson. The Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden is in charge of arrangements.
