Donald A. Dreessen, age 81, of Carroll passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Swan House Assisted Living in Carroll with family at his side.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 21, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Carroll with Rev. B.J. Ukena officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Sunday where there will be a Masonic Memorial Service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Monday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.
Born on March 18, 1931 in Sac County he was the son of Henry and Anna (Auen) Dreessen. Don grew up in the Wall Lake/ Odebolt area with six siblings and graduated from Odebolt High School in 1951. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served for four years during the Korean War on the USS Miller. After serving in the Navy, he worked as a police officer in Storm Lake, 1955-1956. In 1955 he was introduced to Marilyn Ruth Nickels and they married April 8th, 1956 at the First Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Don began his 29 year career with the Iowa State Patrol later in 1956, starting out in Des Moines as a Driver’s License Examiner. A few years later he was transferred to Carroll where he and Marilyn made their home. During retirement, Don enjoyed driving school buses for the Carroll Community Schools, fishing, and having coffee with comrades. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carroll, the Carroll Masonic Lodge, and the Carroll American Legion.
Don is survived by a daughter Nancy Henry and her husband John of Colo, Iowa; a son Dan Dreessen and his wife Kris (Janssen) of rural Glidden; six grandchildren: Alicia, Jessie and Ethan Henry, Austin Janssen, Kaylee and Alicen Dreessen; one great grandson Nathan McFarland; two sisters: Marian Reaman of Sac City and Myra McQuiston of Ecorse, Michigan; a brother-in-law Rich Nickels and his wife Barb of Waukesha, Wisconsin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marilyn in 2004, three brothers: Peter, Jacob, and Myron, and a sister Marie Mooney.
