He received his Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Administration from Drake University in May 2000.

After graduation from UNI, Don enlisted in the U. S. Navy and continued his military service in various service branches - primarily the Army National Guard, until his retirement from the military in 1994. Don retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

On September 27, 1969, he married Kay Christensen in Rockwell City, Ia. To this union three sons were born: William James, 1975, John Andrew, 1977, and Matthew Donald, 1979. Don and Kay made their home in Carroll, Ia. from August 1973 on. Don worked for Iowa Workforce Development in various capacities for over 34 years. Don retired in April 2010.

His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family. He and Kay enjoyed traveling together, and with their sons and families. Spending time with their grandchildren brought him immense joy. His greatest sources of pride were his wife Kay, his three sons, and their families.

He is survived by his wife, Kay, of Carroll; three sons and their families: William (Lecia), Hailey and Braydon, of Urbana, Maryland; John, Isaac, Meredith and Kara, of Shelbyville, Illinois; Matthew (Erin), Abigail and Owen, of Bondurant, Ia.
