   Dennis Bornhoft, age 69, of Irwin, passed away Friday, April 25, 2014, at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning.    Funeral Services will be 11 AM, Monday, April 28, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Irwin, where friends may call on Monday from 9:30 AM until service time. The Reverend Ron Rasmussen will officiate and Nancy Larson will serve as organist. Dennis’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren are honorary bearers. Military honors are by American Legion Post 132 from Manilla.    Dennis Lyn, son of Arlo and Alice (Wenzel) Bornhoft, was born January 14, 1945, at Carroll, Iowa. He attended country school near Westside until his family moved to Manilla in the early 1950s. He then attended school at Manilla, graduating in 1963.    In December of 1964, Dennis enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Infantry, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Most of his service time was spent in Germany, and upon being honorably discharged on December 2, 1967, he returned to Iowa and worked at Larry’s Standard in Manilla and the Co-op in Oakland.    On April 24, 1971, Dennis was united in marriage with Sara Jeanne Soe at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Together they raised four children. The family made their home in Manilla until 2008, when they moved to Irwin. Dennis worked many years for Rasmussen Lumber Company and then in the fertilizer and seed business before retiring in 2010.    Dennis was a member of American Legion Post 132 in Manilla, the Manilla Fire Department, Saddle Club, Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church. His hobbies included gunsmithing, bow hunting, woodworking, doing lawn work and reading. He especially enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeyes, spending time with his family, and attending all sports and school events of his children and grandchildren.    Dennis is survived by his wife Sara Bornhoft of Irwin; four children: Dick Bornhoft and wife Jeanne of Manilla; Marty Bornhoft and wife Alyson of Irwin; Nicole Barry of Coralville and Michael Bornhoft and wife Rebecca of Omaha, Nebraska; Grandchildren: Thomas Bornhoft; Dustin and Stephanie Swanson; Alexandra Bornhoft; Abigail Bornhoft; Ian Bornhoft; Sara and Serena Zambrano; and Abram Bornhoft; two great-grandchildren: Carson and Chloe Swanson; a brother Byron and Patty Bornhoft; a sister Lana Georgius; brother-in-law Patrick Mooney; sister-in-law Mary Ann Soe; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and by special neighbors: Nick, Kristin, Carson, Jackson and Easton Woebke.    He was preceded in death by his parents; Sara’s parents Doc and Beulah Soe; a brother Doug Bornhoft and his wife Sheila; a sister Julie Mooney; and two brothers-in-law Pete Soe and Brad Georgius.    The Johnson & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.
