Delores Lewis

On May 24, 1927, a baby girl named Delores Y. Kimrey was born in Perry, Iowa, to Leonard and June Kimrey. At the age of 3, Delores went to stay with Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Starling in Bayard, Iowa. Delores would say, “June gave me life and breath, but Edith was my mother.” Delores attended Bayard Community School until her junior year and graduated from Scranton Community School. In 1945, she married Gail Lewis of Scranton. They made their home in the Scranton community. From their love Lanny, Randy, and Leesa were born. Delores worked hard at different jobs until she found her talents could shine in the Scranton School cafeteria, ultimately holding the head cook position for over 25 years. She was a member of the Scranton Church of Christ and the Ladene Club. She enjoyed camping at her favorite summer vacation spots, Hyde Park and Ingham Lake, with family and friends. Many hours were spent soaking in the summer sun as Delores would read, go fishing, or take long walks. Of all the things in life, Delores was the most proud of her family. She instilled hard work and the love of music in her children. Her family was always the most important no matter what. As her family grew, grandchildren and great-grandchildren became the apple of her eye. Her dedication to them was ever present, bless her heart. She loved spoiling them, she would say, grinning, spoiling them rotten. Her final wish came true during a thunderstorm on April 26, 2009, when surrounded by family she peacefully slipped away. Grandchildren: Chad Cummings and his wife Emily of Jefferson, IA; Brandy (Squibb) Thompson and her husband Kyle of Scranton, IA; Wendy (Squibb) Johnson and her husband Thomas of Burlington, IA; and Ashley Squibb of Scranton, IA. Great Grand Children: Emily Johnson, Zachary Johnson, Arizona Cummings, Victoria Johnson, Mina Cummings, Jaron Thompson, Joseph Thompson, Levi Cummings, Veronica Johnson, Zion Cummings, Americus Squibb, and Steven Johnson. Her sister, Irene Pound of Jefferson, IA, sister-in law Opal Kinner of Graettinger, IA, sister-in law Ruby Pritchard of De Soto, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Steven Squibb in 1995, her husband Gail in 2001, and special brother-in-law Alan Pound in 2006. Funeral services will be held 6:00 P.M. Wednesday evening, April 29, 2009 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton with Rev. Chad Cummings of the Jefferson First Assembly of God Church officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday until the time of service.
