Deane Arnold Hofstad, age 80, of Glidden, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 22, 2010 at the home of his daughter in Glidden.
A funeral service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden with Fr. Anthony Pick officiating . Visitation will be held at the funeral home after 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday until the time of service. Burial will be Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.
Born on June 17, 1930 at Akron, Iowa, he was the son of Arlo and Floy (Conner) Hofstad. He grew up in Glidden and graduated from Glidden High School and attended Drake University. He served in the U.S. Navy after World War II. He was married to Ramona (Schmitz) in 1955 at St. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll. He worked for National Bellas Hess Stores, now known as K-Mart, in Illinois, Michigan, New York, Georgia, and Tennessee, and returned home to Glidden in 1972, and worked for Eddie Quinn Clothiers. He owned Deano’s for Food in Glidden for several years and recently worked for Burger King in Carroll. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in Glidden. In his spare time he enjoyed landscaping his yard and flower gardens. He was a huge animal lover, extremely compassionate. He never knew a stranger and knew how to put people at ease. Deane dealt with his failing health with humor.
Survivors include a daughter Monica Clark and her husband Dan of Glidden; a daughter-in-law Martha Hofstad of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; three grandchildren: Katie and Abby Clark of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Dylan Hofstad of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; a brother Curtis Hofstad and his wife Carolyn of Lake Park, Florida; a sister-in-law Dorothy Judge and her husband Joe of West Des Moines, Iowa; and a brother-in-law Joe Schmitz and his wife Esther of rural Carroll. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son Bryce Hofstad, and a sister Connie McCarthy.
