David Lee Best, age 80, of Carroll passed away on Friday, October 24, 2014 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a short illness of Pulmonary Hypertension and COPD. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at St. John Lutheran Church in Carroll with Rev. Cindy Johnson officiating. Friends may call after 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a prayer service held at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Casket bearers will be members of the Merle Hay Post #386 of the American Legion. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden with military honors by the Glidden American Legion. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in David’s name and memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church. The son of John and Louise (Hein) Best he was born on his grandparent’s farm home near Glidden on October 3, 1934. He was baptized and confirmed at St John Lutheran Church in the country near Lidderdale. David attended Grant Township #5 country school until the school closed and then attended Glidden Community School in Glidden through 7th grade. In 1947, the Best family purchased a farm near Lanesboro. David then attended school in Lohrville and graduated in 1953. After graduating David worked on the family farm and did work for other area farmers. He also did construction work. In January, 1956, he started his long career with Iowa Highway Commission now State of Iowa. David was drafted into the Army on April 3, 1957 and received an honorable discharge on April 4, 1959. He spent most of his service time at Fort Lewis, Washington. After his discharge, he returned to his duties for the State. On November 26, 1969, David married Joyce Ann Stauber at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Omaha. They made their home in Lake City until June of 1977 when David transferred to the Engineer’s office in Storm Lake. He retired on December 31, 1996. David and Joyce continuing living in Storm Lake until Joyce retired on August 31, 2005. Upon retirement they moved to their home in Carroll on September 15, 2005. The family traveled and visited many states. The most memorable trip was to Joyce’s father’s home in Furth Wald, Germany in 1999. David was always a farmer at heart, working on the family farm until it was sold. He loved to garden, work in the yard, going to auctions, garage sales, and spending time with his family. David is survived by his wife Joyce of Carroll; a sister Patricia Addison of Lanesboro; three brothers: Jerry (Linda) Best of Denison, Jim ( Karen) Best of Sioux Falls, SD, and Paul (Harriett) Best of Social Circle, GA; a sister-in-law Jeannette (Jim) Eischeid of Jefferson; two brothers-in-law Gerald (Linda) Stauber of Newell and Larry Stauber of Lawton; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. David was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Tony and Lucille Stauber, a son David Jr. on May 12, 2001, two brothers and their spouses: William (Audrey) Best and John Dean (Ruth) Best, a sister Agnes (Dennis) Reed, in-laws: Mick Addison and Merideth Stauber, and three infant great nieces: Danielle Hilton, Hanna Carlson and Rachel Best.
