Shorty then attended DMACC in Ankeny and earned an Associates Degree in Business.    On April 5, 1975, Shorty was united in marriage with his high school sweetheart and best friend, Doris Meiners at Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids. Three children were born to this union. Shorty and Doris first made their home in Des Moines where Shorty worked for Puckett Electrical Tools. Upon returning to Coon Rapids he worked for Bergan Welding Supply out of Spencer as a salesman. Following that he broke and trained horses for Harris Hess at Star Farm. In 1989, he joined Pella Window Corporation and worked in Carroll, Iowa; Murray, Kentucky and finally in Pella, Iowa, where he was a CI PDSN (Continuous Improvement Pella Distribution Sales Network) engineering specialist.    Shorty was a member of Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids.
