Darrell E. “Shorty” Bass, son of George Raymond and Vera Mae (Wood) Bass, was born June 1, 1955, at Jefferson, Iowa. He grew up in Coon Rapids and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1973. Shorty then attended DMACC in Ankeny and earned an Associates Degree in Business. On April 5, 1975, Shorty was united in marriage with his high school sweetheart and best friend, Doris Meiners at Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids. Three children were born to this union. Shorty and Doris first made their home in Des Moines where Shorty worked for Puckett Electrical Tools. Upon returning to Coon Rapids he worked for Bergan Welding Supply out of Spencer as a salesman. Following that he broke and trained horses for Harris Hess at Star Farm. In 1989, he joined Pella Window Corporation and worked in Carroll, Iowa; Murray, Kentucky and finally in Pella, Iowa, where he was a CI PDSN (Continuous Improvement Pella Distribution Sales Network) engineering specialist. Shorty was a member of Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids. Throughout the years, he also held membership in the Kiwanis, Men’s Club at church and served on the Carroll County Fair Board. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, lifting weights, biking, playing cards and eating popcorn while watching Duke Bluedevils basketball and Pittsburgh Steelers football. Above all, Shorty enjoyed spending time with his wife and children and spoiling his grandchildren. On Friday, April 17, 2009, Shorty died suddenly and unexpectedly of natural causes while on a business trip in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was 53 years of age. Shorty’s final act of kindness was to be an organ and tissue donor.
