Darlene M. Clark Heck passed away peacefully at the Carroll Health Center on November 5, 2014.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Fr. Robert Gralapp as Celebrant assisted by Deacon Gary Schon. Friends may call at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 3:30 PM on Friday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. by St. Elizabeth Seton Parish. Lectors for the mass will be Rich Wallace and Deb Irlmeier. Gift Bearers will be the great grandchildren Lizzie and Allie Douglas and Tyler and Zachary Nguyen. Music will be provided by the St. Elizabeth Seton Choir with Mary Ross as organist and Mike Bolton as soloist. Mass servers will be Megan Wallace and Kali Irlmeier. Casket bearers will be Dan Clark, Brett Irlmeier, Brad Douglas, Jacob Wallace, Steve Finken and Chris Wallace. Honorary Casket bearers Samantha Erickson, Melissa Nguyen, Katie Clark and Abby Clark.
Darlene Margaret Schleisman was born on August 25, 1926 to Henry Joseph and Alice Mary (Rohrbeck) Schleisman near Lidderdale. She attended Glidden High School where she graduated at the age of 16 in May, 1943.
She then moved to California during World War II and worked for American Aluminum. Darlene moved back to Glidden in 1945. She was married to Melvin A. Clark at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Carroll on October 3, 1946. They lived in rural Lanesboro, Lake City, Carroll, Breda, and Storm Lake before settling in Glidden. Together they had four children. Melvin passed away on February 4, 1978.
Darlene was an avid Glidden-Ralston supporter. She was named Fan of the year commemorating the 65th anniversary of her being named the first Homecoming Queen for Glidden High School. She supported all of the activities at the school.
Darlene loved spending time with her family. She loved cooking, baking, knitting and sewing. However, her gift of painting was one that was shared with her family and many in the community. She was the custodian at First National Bank in Glidden. She worked at the school as one of the lunch ladies.
On March 9, 1985 Darlene married Merlin Heck in Scottsdale, AZ. They made their home north of Ralston until she became a resident of the Carroll Health Center in September of 2011.
Surviving are her husband Merlin Heck of Ralston; three daughters: Linda (Henry) Seay of Mountain Home, AR, Peggy (Jim) Irlmeier of Glidden, and Amy (Rich) Wallace of Carroll; a son Dan (Monica) Clark of Glidden; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a sister Donna Sutter of Casa Grande, AZ. She also has two stepdaughters Deborah Young of Carroll and Becky (Kevin) Hale of Spirit Lake; a stepson Gary (Barb) Heck of Urbandale; nine step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Melvin, a sister Joan (Gale) Kindred, a brother-in-law Ted Sutter, sisters-in-law and their husbands: Florence (Carl) Vincent and Virginia (Ronald) Allen, a stepdaughter Vicki Zeigler and a step grandson Ryan Peterson.
