Darlene June Halbur, age 86, of Carroll passed away on Monday, September 7, 2015 at Hawkeye Care Center in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9:00 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. Lector for the Mass will be Sherry Greteman. Gift Bearers will be Emma and Clare Messerich. Mass server will be Austin Venteicher. Music for the Mass will be by the Holy Spirit Choir with Barb McDermott as organist. Casket bearers will be Matthew Berger, Jeremy Halbur, Jesse Morris, John Berger, Wayne Morris, and Keisha Holm. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll and online condolences may be left at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on June 19, 1929 north east of Glidden, she was the daughter of Walter D. and Opal E. (Dickson) Thede. Darlene lived on a farm near Dickson Timber until her family moved to a farm near Coon Rapids when she was four years old. She attended Richmond # 7 country school near Coon Rapids and then the Dickson #2 country school north of Glidden. Darlene’s family moved to Ayrshire when she was in the 7th grade and she graduated from Silver Lake School. Following school she helped on the family farm, did babysitting, and worked in the Ayrshire Hotel cooking and cleaning rooms. Darlene was married to Leonard J. Halbur on November 26, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake City by Fr. Roder. The couple made their home south of Glidden until 1951 when they moved to a farm near Maple River where they raised their six children. She worked as a CNA at the Speaker Nursing Home for several years and the Carroll Manor for 23 years. Darlene and Leonard retired from farming in 1982 and moved to Carroll where they owned and operated several apartment houses. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, the VFW, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She has helped at the Carroll Congregate meal site for several years where she enjoyed socializing. Darlene also enjoyed playing cards, reading, sewing, cross word puzzles, writing poems and listening to country music. Darlene is survived by three daughters: Judy Moorhouse and her husband David of Glidden, Janis Berger and her husband John of Carroll, and Joyce Morris and her husband Wayne of Jefferson; a son James Halbur and his wife Kitty of Carroll; 12 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren; two brothers: Darold Thede of Jacksonville, FL, and Darwin Thede of Arizona; several in-laws and their spouses, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leonard in 2013, a son Joe in 1994, a son John in 2012, a granddaughter Opal Morris in 1990, a grandson Shawn Halbur in 2008, a great grandson Jacob Gibbs, three sisters: Delores in infancy, Lucille Haubrich, and Coleen Heim.
