Dale William George, age 87, passed away peacefully on April 8th 2014 at the Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Friday, April 11th 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Rev. Lynn Gunderson officiating. Friends may call at the Johnson and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids after 5:00 on Thursday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Music for the service will be by: Dr’s Mike and Gwen Luepke, Cindy Seastrom, and Carolyn Flook. Casket bearers will be Bill George, Gary George, Phil Betts, Dean Herron, Will George, and Kirk Hughes. Honorary casket bearers will be Loyd Textor, Harris Hess, Dean Betts, Dr. Ronald Davis , Dr. John Clayburg, Duane Baker , Edward Kinnick , Gerald Hachmeister, Bruce Annear, Sam Cretsinger, Jeff Hachmeister, and John J. Schumacher. Burial will be in Union Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids with military honors by the Coon Rapids American Legion Post 357. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Johnson and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids and online condolences may be left for Dale’s family at www.johnsonandwoodhouse.com Born on January 31, 1927 northeast of Coon Rapids, he was the son of Fred and Lorena (Austin) George. Dale was raised on his family’s farm. He attended Coon Rapids Schools.   During his junior year in high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served 18 months during WWII, primarily aboard the USS Grant, a troop transport ship. He returned to Coon Rapids and finished high school, graduating in 1947. Dale married A. Darlene Betts on November 11, 1948 at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua, IA.   Darlene was the love of his life and he showed her his love and devotion for next 65 years. Dale was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.   Following his military career, Dale and Darlene farmed in the Coon Rapids area until retiring in 1986. During retirement they started D&D Framing. Dale and Darlene matted and framed many pictures and paintings across western Iowa. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids where he served on several boards. Dale also served as a Union Township Trustee for many years and was a past president and Hall of Fame inductee to the Carroll Co. Fair.   He was a member the Coon Rapids American Legion Post 357. Dale enjoyed woodworking, fishing, gardening, making and flying kites and was a proud Rodeo Grandpa.      Dale is survived by his wife Darlene; a daughter Patricia Slaybaugh and her husband Tom of Ankeny, IA; a son Joe George and his wife Jolene of Coon Rapids; three grandchildren: Emily Hughes and her husband Kirk of Council Bluffs, IA, William A. George of Coon Rapids, and Katie Mae George of Lake City, IA; two great grandchildren: Jackson and Riley Hughes; brother John George and his wife Marcella of Nevada, IA; sister-in-law Arlene George of Coon Rapids; sister-in-law Mildred Herron of Bayard, IA; sister-in-law Grace Betts of Omaha, NE; brother-in-law Bryan Betts of Audubon, IA; brother-in-law Cleo Betts and his wife Kae of Elkhart, ID; and several nieces and nephews.   He will be missed.      Dale was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Lorene Textor - Schumacher , and a brother Wade George.
