Cy Hulsebus

Cy K. Hulsebus, age 90, of Carroll, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Swan House in Carroll. Born on November 8, 1920 at Buck Grove, Iowa, he was the son of Ernest and Kate (Young) Hulsebus. He grew up in Harlan, Iowa, and graduated from Harlan High School in 1938. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during WW II. He was married to Lois Olerich in 1942. The couple raised their family in Carroll. Cy was employed by Farner Bocken Company in Carroll for 60 years as a buyer. He attended First United Methodist Church in Carroll and he was a member of the Maurice Dunn Post of the American Legion in Carroll. Cy was a member of the Carroll Country Club for many years. Cy was an avid and accomplished golfer who won several Carroll Country Club Men’s Championships. He played for 60 years without experiencing the thrill of making a holw in one. Then in 1996, at 75 years old he made up for lost time by nailing three in one year. Known as “Never-Say-Die-Cy” he shot all three with his seven iron. Cy and former Carroll resident Bob Matt once played an exhibition match at the Carroll Country Club against legendary women’s professional Patty Berg and Phyllis Otto Germain. Surviving are two daughters: Kris Hulsebus of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Laurie Hinckley and Bill of Las Vegas, Nevada; a son Anthony Hulsebus and his wife Susan of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two grandchildren: Zach and Zoe Hulsebus; a sister Wilma Krueger of Lincoln, Nebraska, and several nieces and nephews. Cy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois in 2005, a son Terry, a daughter Mary a sister Charlotte Schell and her husband Dick, a brother Gail and his wife Helen and a sister Lois Farner and her husband Bill. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Carroll with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Carroll American Legion. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Ellen Severin and soloist will be Mr. Skip Raridon. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to the Bill Evans Foundation for Kids and may be left at the church.
