Cletus “Red” Raymond Winker, age 75, of Glidden, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, following a brief illness. Born on April 26, 1933 at Carroll, Iowa, he was the son of Arthur E. and Henrietta (Rust) Winker. He grew up in Carroll and attended Carroll High School. He then attended seminary in Perrysville, Missouri, for two years before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served four years in the Navy during the Korean conflict. He was married to Jeanette Fink on April 20, 1963 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Manning, Iowa. The couple owned and operated the Glidden Body Shop for 35 years. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden and the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion of Glidden. In his spare time Red enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, golfing, and repairing cars. Surviving are his wife Jeanette of Glidden; four sons: Arthur Winker and his wife Tammy of Glidden, Eric Winker and his wife Susan of Carroll, Don Winker and his wife Elizabeth of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Mark Winker and his fiancé Kara Linde of Glidden; three sisters: Thelma Waltz of Sioux City, Iowa, Isabelle Hopfinger of Kansas City, Missouri, and Therese Borden of West Des Moines, Iowa; and a brother Daryl Winker and his wife Inez of Carroll. He was preceded in death by his parents, and six siblings: Arthur in infancy, Donald Winker, Robert Winker, Joseph Winker, Lorraine Curran and her husband Ed, and Ruth Henney and her husband Robert, and a brother-in-law Leo Hopfinger. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 3, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Rev. Ed Tiedeman as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 2:30 P.M. on Sunday where there will be a Rosary at 3:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. by St. Elizabeth Seton Parish. Lectors for the mass will be Tammy and Susan Winker. Gift Bearers will be grandchildren Brandi Winker, Erin Winker, and Avery Winker. Mass servers will be Tyler and Tanner Headlee. Eucharistic ministers will be Jerry and Rita Mathine and Martha Buelt. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors by the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion of Glidden. Casket bearers will be nephews: John Borden, Kevin Winker, Mark Hopfinger, and grandchildren: Jason Winker Krystin Winker, and Dylan Winker. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to St. Mary’s Indian Mission in Memory of Cletus Winker in care of Father John Mittelstadt P.O. Box 39, Tohatchi, New Mexico 87325.
