Charles Smouse, age 86, of Scranton, died Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Monday, January 6, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Scranton with Reverend Lynn Gunderson, officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 AM until service time at the church on Monday. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery. Lula Garnes will serve as organist. Casketbearers are Randy Calvert, Colton Calvert, Ethan Calvert, Doug Sukovaty, Gib Sukovaty and Lyle Brinker. Honorary casket bearers will be Tim Smouse and Charles’ Nephews. Military Honors will be by the American Legion. The Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton is in charge of arrangements. Charles Clayton Smouse was born near Coon Rapids, IA, on March 17, 1927 to Don and Emma (Rhubee) Smouse. Charles attended country school southwest of Coon Rapids and graduated from Viola Center. He was in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. After Charles was discharged, he farmed with his father. On September 15, 1950, Charles was united in marriage with Marlene Olson in Duluth, Minnesota. To this union three children were born: Tim, Jeanette, and Nancy. Charles continued to farm near Coon Rapids until 1959 when he and Marlene moved to Scranton, where they continued farming until the late 90’s. They moved into Scranton in 1992. Charles was also a member of the United Methodist Church, Gideons, and Odd Fellow (60-year member). His interests included woodworking, fishing trips to Minnesota, playing cards, and being with family and friends.Charles especially enjoyed day road trips to “anywhere” with his pal, Gene Sukovaty. Charles is survived by his wonderful wife Marlene Smouse of Scranton; son Tim Smouse of Delhi; two daughters Jeanette McGreevy of Des Moines and Nancy Calvert and husband Randy of St. Charles; two grandsons Colton Calvert and Ethan Calvert. Charles is also survived by his brother, Harold Smouse and wife Maxine of Coon Rapids. Preceding him in death were his parents, Don and Emma Smouse; brothers, Jake, Donald, Fritz, and Dale; and sisters Jessie and Thelma and an infant son Scott.
