Cecil "Curt" Crutis Stokes

Cecil Curtis “ Curt” Stokes, age 81, of Glidden passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Born on August 2, 1926 in Carroll County he was the son of Harry and Lueda (Davenport) Stokes. He attended country schools as a boy and graduated from Lanesboro School in 1943. He served in the Army for two years during WW II. Upon returning home he worked in a meat packing plant in Omaha. He returned to the Carroll where he was employed at Heider Manufacturing. He married Marie Blair on January 8, 1950 in Lake City at Woodlawn Christian Church by Rev.Votruba. They started farming in 1953 north of Ralston at which time he also worked construction and for the railroad. In 1965 they moved south of Ralston where they continued to farm. Upon retirement they moved to Glidden where enjoyed movies, reading and going for walks. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Glidden. He is survived by his wife Marie of Glidden; three children: Chris Johnston and her husband John of Glidden, Annette Stokes of Glidden, and Mark Stokes and his wife Karla of Ankeny; Six grandchildren: Tyler Johnston, Ashley Tomson, Crystal Bennett, Katie Tuel, Kim Stokes, and Matt Stokes; three great grandchildren: Brenden Johnston, Trevor Tuel, and Blake Tuel; a brother Melvin Stokes and his wife Doris of Lake City; a brother-in-law Milet Carlson of Lyton; and a sister-in-law Rosie Doner of Council Bluffs. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Marvin and his wife Doris, and a sister Beverly Carlson. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden with Rev. Chad Jennings of the United Methodist Church in Glidden officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. Organist for the service will be Mary Ross. Burial will be in the Lanesboro Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Tyler Johnston, Matt Stokes, Don Tuel, Gary Stokes, Noel Blair, and Jim Stokes. Honorary casket bearers will be Katie Tuel, KimStokes, Ashley Tomson and Crystal Bennett. Military honors will be conducted by Merle Hay Post of the American Legion of Glidden.
