Carla was born June 30, 1950, in New Richmond, Wisconsin, to parents Francis and Inez Cox. She spent her youth in New Richmond where the family lived next door to her grandparents. She enjoyed her time with family and friends, was a Brownie and swam in the local pool. The family moved from New Richmond to Humboldt, Iowa in December of 1966.
Carla graduated from Humboldt High School and attended Fort Dodge Community College before graduating from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education. After earning her degree, she continued her education, taking additional classes at Brigham Young University and Chadron State College.
She taught both art and home economics at Sioux County High School and Kimball High School in Nebraska, at Coon-Rapids Bayard Community Schools, and finished her teaching career at Kuemper Catholic School in Carroll, Iowa, before retiring in 2019. While teaching at CR-B schools, she served as a speech team coach and junior class sponsor.
Carla married Joe Schaefer and to that union were born three daughters, Jennifer, Jessica, and Jaclyn. She was so proud to have daughters that she often sewed matching mother-daughter dresses for the family.
She volunteered with 4-H youth groups while her daughters were in 4-H in Harrison and she continued supporting 4-H in her communities even after they were grown. She loved painting and teaching her daughters to sew and bake. The kitchen was the heart of the home for Carla, and baking goodies for friends and family was her way of showing love to all. She was very involved in her church communities as well.
Carla was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Nancy. She is survived by her daughters Jennifer (TJ), Jessica (Mark), and Jaclyn; grandchildren Connor, Luke, Cole, Trent, Chloe, and Cory; a great-grandchild Avry; and brother Darryl.
