Calvin Constantine Hughes, Age 90 years young, formerly of Glidden, Iowa, passed away on March 20, 2016 at Grandview Heights in Marshalltown, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Rev. Brian Camara and Rev. Abigail Kowalke officiating. Organist for the service will be Marlys Conner and soloist will be Mary Ross. Casket bearers will be Monte Hughes, Todd Hughes, Travis Hughes, Steve Gerdes, Larry Dobson, Shaun Kowalke, and Reginald Hobbs. Honorary Casket bearers will be Ken Stubbe, Nick Stubbe J.J. Stubbe, and Glen Kerkhoff. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden with military honors by the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion of Glidden. Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday evening and will resume at the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. on Friday until the time of service. In his youth, Calvin attended rural schools & received his diploma from the Harrison County School system. Calvin’s love of gardening, farming and working with horses was interrupted by a time with the troops in the Pacific Operations and occupation forces in Japan. He was married to Esther (Shelton) at the Christian Church parsonage in Logan on June 28, 1946 by Rev. Tilden Lewis. To this union, two sons were born. Cal was adept at engineering, construction and communication. This led to a career with Boyer Telephone Company, which became Central Iowa Telephone and later General Telephone and Electronics Company. He enjoyed camping, hunting and traveling to visit relatives and friends. Cal was a member of the Logan Fire Department, Glidden Fire Department, Glidden American Legion, and First Presbyterian Church in Glidden, serving various posts, including sexton. Calvin is survived by a son, Craig Hughes and his wife Donna of Laurel; Grandchildren Monte Hughes, Todd Hughes of Jewell, Tina and Steve Gerdes of Fort Dodge, Travis and Noel Hughes of Pleasantville, Tanya and Larry Dobson of Ankeny, Jessica and Reggie Hobbs of Goose Creek, SC, Abigail and Shaun Kowalke of Ridgeway, SC, three sisters: Ila Graves of Storm Lake, Lottie Nelson of Storm Lake, Bonnie and Glen Holland of Rockwell City and one brother: Carl Hughes of Logan, as well as great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, son Clinton (1994), wife Esther (2008), granddaughter Monica, brothers: Lyle, Clyde, Glen, Donald and sister Marcella.
