Bonnie Jean Nielsen, age 75, of Carroll passed away at St. Anthony Regional Hospital on
Monday, April 14, 2008.
She was born on Dec. 2, 1932, to Ruby and Don Mick, in Bussey, Iowa and raised in DesMoines, IA,
graduating from North High School.
On Dec. 13, 1957, she married Gerald Nielsen of Arnolds Park, Iowa. They had 3 children, Jeff, Randy, and Vicki. They made their home in California, New Mexico, Washington, Wyoming, and Iowa as he was employed with Bechtel Construction Company as an engineer. She moved to Carroll shortly after his death in 1996 and resided at 431 Pleasant Ridge Road until December, 2007, when she moved into the Swan House in Carroll.
Bonnie was a homemaker and also a motel manager from 1988 - 1996. She did volunteer work with PTA, Cub Scouts, local hospitals and many clubs her children participated in.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Carroll. Along with being a loving, devoted Grandma, she was an avid Cubs, Hawkeye, and sports fan and enjoyed animals, especially her cat Maggie.
Bonnie is survived by her children, Jeff Nielsen and his wife Jane of Carroll, Randy Nielsen and his fiance Kathy Cottington of Blair, NE,and Vicki McElmeel and her husband Eric of Logan, IA; 4 grandchildren: Aubrey and Jensen McElmeel and Mark and Laura Nielsen; 3 step-grandchildren, Carrie Seberger and her husband Paul, Nathan Etherington and his wife Pam and Grant Etherington; 3 great grandchildren, Aaron, Ellie and Isaac Seberger, a brother, Larry Mick of Des Moines, a sister-in-law Pat Nielsen of Papillion, NE, and several nieces and nephews.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald L. Nielsen, her parents, Ruby and Don Mick, her parents-in-law, Elmer and Olga Nielsen, brothers Bobby "Joe" and Duane "Tike" Mick, and brothers-in-law, James and Norris Nielsen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday, April 18, 2008 at St. John Lutheran Church in Carroll with Rev. Kathy Wicks officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 P.M. on Thursday. The casket will be moved to the church at 9 A.M. on Friday to lie in state until the time of service. Interment will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.
