Bill Sammons, age 71, of Lidderdale, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll following a long illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale with Pastor Bill Weiss officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 A.M. on Saturday until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Mrs. Agnes Onken and soloist will be Ron Hauser. Burial will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery near Auburn.
Born on April 18, 1940 at Cheboygan, Michigan, he was the son of Paul and Alice (Hubacker) Sammons. He grew up in Cheboygan where he graduated from high school. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 and served until 1964. Bill then attended the Brown Institute in Minneapolis and earned a degree in broadcasting. Following college he worked in several cities as a radio broadcaster and moved to Carroll in 1979 where he worked for Carroll Broadcasting KCIM and retired in 2006. He was married to Marietta Finley on February 16, 1985 at The Welcome Inn in Carroll. The couple has made their home in Lidderdale since 1986. Bill was a lifelong musician playing in the Cruisers of California and the Reflections of Iowa. He enjoyed golf, sports, trivia, crossword puzzles, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a Detroit Lions, Chicago Cubs, and Michigan State fan.
Surviving are his wife Marietta of Lidderdale, IA; a daughter April Neske and her husband Guy of Minneapolis, MN; a son Scot Sammons of Minneapolis, MN; three step-daughters: Kim Finley of Des Moines, IA, Cathy Hanson and her husband Jeff of Spirit Lake, IA, Kelly Finley and her husband Mark Nockels of South Pasadena, CA; a step son Kirk Finley and his wife Bev of Breda, IA; thirteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Coletta Mohr of Fonda, IA, and Ethel Drees of Adams, MN; and two brothers-in-laws Cornelius Daiker and his wife Glenna of Auburn, IA and Warren Daiker and his wife Marilyn of Fonda, IA; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Marilyn Werner, and brother Daniel Sammons.
