Betty J. Madsen, age 79, of Glidden, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral services will be held on 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 24, 2011 at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden with Pastor Alan Miller officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Sunday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Monday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Becky Miller. Casket bearers will be grandsons: Joshua Shirbroun, Jacob Shirbroun, Jessie Shirbroun, and great grandson Dylan Shirbroun and friends Verlon Breon and David Molle. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.
Born on September 28, 1932 at Audubon, Iowa, she was the daughter of James and Mildred (Bauer) Petersen. She grew up in Glidden where she graduated from high school. Following high school she helped on her family’s farm until she was married to Harold A. Madsen on November 2, 1953 at the Lutheran Church in Scranton. The couple farmed in Audubon County for three years and then moved south of Ralston where they farmed for 13 years then north of Glidden where they farmed for 33 years. Harold and Betty moved into Glidden in 1978. Betty was employed by Stone Printing for many years. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden where she was very active in LWML, the altar guild, and quilting. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting, cooking, gardening, canning, helping Harold with the mowing, but most of all spending time with her family. Betty was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
Surviving are her husband Harold of Glidden; a son Richard Madsen and his wife Jan of Grimes, Iowa; a daughter Ann Marie Madsen - Vogel her husband Mike Vogel of Coon Rapids, Iowa; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Neil and her husband Jim of San Francisco and Lil Kemp of Hiawatha, Iowa; a brother John Petersen and his wife Shirley of Glidden; three brothers-in-law: Maynard Madsen and his wife Rose of Audubon, Alton Madsen of Audubon, and Leo Madsen and his wife Janice of Audubon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, a son Harold Jr. in 1975, a brother Ron Petersen, and a sister Millie Jean Petersen.
