Bernice Evelyn Halbur, age 95, of Coon Rapids, IA, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by family.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids with Fr. Merlin Schrad as Celebrant. Lector for the Mass will be Rosemary Paulsen. Music for the Mass will be by the Annunciation Choir with Diane Slater as organist. Gift bearers will be her granddaughters and casket bearers will be grandsons with granddaughters as honorary casket bearers. Burial will be in the Coon Rapids Cemetery.
Visitation will begin with a Rosary at 4:30 P.M. on Monday at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids followed by visitation from 5 – 7 P.M. Additional visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 – 10:15 A.M. prior to the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family for a later designation.

Bernice was born on August 14, 1930 and she was the daughter of Joseph and Martha (Roth) Heithoff. Her family lived northeast of Templeton and she attended Sacred Heart Catholic School. She was married to Edwin Halbur on September 6, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton by Fr. Schultes. The couple farmed northeast of Manning until 1956 when they bought a farm southwest of Coon Rapids where they raised their family. Bernice was very active in their farming operation, and they retired from farming in 2009 and moved into Coon Rapids. Bernice worked for Garst and Thomas Seed Company, and she volunteered with the Coon Rapids school lunch program. She was a member of Annunciation Parish in Coon Rapids and served on the church guild, the funeral luncheon committee, and helped the church host Bingo at Thomas Rest Haven. She was also active with the Coon Rapids American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed baking, gardening, reading, and tending to her flower beds. Bernice dearly loved her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. Bernice and Ed hosted a weeklong “Cousins Camp” every summer which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Bernice is survived by her children and their families: Joyce Dowell (Jim) of Kansas City, MO, Don Halbur (Val) of Springfield, MO, Dave Halbur (Chris) of Coon Rapids, Rick Halbur (Nadine) of Adel, Judy Oswald (Mike) of Coon Rapids, Doug Halbur (Lisa) of Omaha, and Denny Halbur (Julie) of Coon Rapids; a son-in-law Mark Holdsworth of Manilla; nineteen grandchildren; twenty three great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; a sister Edna Schrad of Templeton, and many nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Edwin of 72 years in 2021; a son Dale Halbur in 1998; and a daughter Jan Holdsworth in 2021.
She was also preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Martha Heithoff; her in-laws Bernard and Margaret Halbur; four sisters: Bonita Sporrer (John), Irene Richter (Mike), Rita Simons (Joe), and Ruth Brown (LeRoy); five brothers: Linus Heithoff (Marge), Marvin Heithoff (Esther), Eugene Heithoff (Margaret), Virgil Heithoff (Millie), and in-laws: Sam Schrad, Martha Rohe (Vernon), Helen Loeffelholz (Walt), Agnes Schwaller (Jerry), Rita Sporrer (Harold), Leander Halbur (Eileen), Louis Halbur (Agnes) and Vi Rohe.
