Bernard “Bernie” Elmer Verkennes, age 59, of Scranton passed away on Friday, July 8, 2016 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton with Rev. Joyce Webb officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Junction Township Cemetery near Grand Junction. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established and memorials may be left at the funeral home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on June 27, 1957 in Flint, Michigan, he was the son of Raymond and Wanda (Kingsley) Hose. Bernard grew up in Flint where he attended school. Following high school he went to work for Richfield Iron Works. He moved to Texas with his brother and did maintenance work on school busses. Bernie moved to Scranton in 1991and worked for Carroll Coolers. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching westerns, and spending time with his family and his dog Tootsie. Bernie is survived by his mother Wanda June Hose of Turkey, North Carolina; his special friend for 15 years, Linda Gustoff, of Scranton; three brothers: Kelvin Verkennes (Mary Lou) of Clio, Michigan, Darrell Hose (Ruth) Vail, Iowa, and Daniel Hose (Christina) of Lake City, Michigan; a sister Cathy Dues (Russell) of Turkey, North Carolina; a step-daughter Jenny Gustoff of Scranton; four step-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bernie was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father, a brother David Hose, a sister Linda Verkennes, a son Lucas Verkennes, and a step-daughter Jayann Butler.
