Berna Louise Pierce, age 90, of Lake City passed away of a rapid cancer on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City where she had been for the past two weeks.
Born on October 21, 1917 at Lake City she was the daughter of Edward and Celia (Simpson) Filmer. She grew up in Lake City and graduated from Lake City High School in 1936. She worked as a nurse at McVay Hospital in Lake City. She was married to George Richard Pierce on June 29, 1940 in Lake City. The couple farmed near Auburn then moved to a farm south east of Lanesboro in 1944. Berna moved to Lake City in 1986. She was a member of Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City. She enjoyed being outside, taking care of farm animals and milking cows, cooking, gardening, flowers, traveling in later years, but most of all she enjoyed her family.
Surviving are a daughter Cheryl (Sherry) Sporleder and her husband Roger of Glidden; three grandchildren: Pamela Masching and her husband Terry of Lawton, Iowa, Curtis Sporleder and his wife Heather of Unionville, Missouri, and Jacquie Deeds and her husband Kelly of Unionville, Missouri; five great grandchildren: Mackenzie Jo Masching, Mitchel Joseph Masching, Joel Robert Sporleder, Carson Jo Sporleder, and Kelley Lynn Deeds; a sister Marie Daisey of Lake City; a brother Harold Filmer and his wife Dena of Lake City; a sister-in-law Faye Filmer of Lake City; a sister-in-law Lola Filmer of Lake City; her dear dear friend Emma Hanssen of Lake City; several of her husband’s brothers and sisters, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, her husband George in 1971, brothers: Raymond Filmer and his wife Betty, Carl Filmer, and Jim Filmer, her mother-in-law and father-in-law Alma (Buss) Pierce and William Pierce, and several of her husband’s brothers and sisters and other in-laws.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City with Rev. Carla Hillyer officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10 A.M. until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Sylvia Streufert. Burial will be at Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Casket bearers will be her grandchildren and their spouses: Pamela Masching, Terry Masching, Curtis Sporleder, Heather Sporleder, Jacquie Deeds, and Kelly Deeds. Honorary casket bearers will be her great grandchildren: Mackenzie Jo Masching, Mitchel Joseph Masching, Joel Robert Sporleder, Kelley Lynn Deeds, and Carsen Jo Sporleder.
