Ben “Bud” I. McQueen, age 82, of Carroll, Iowa, and formerly of rural Farragut, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Carroll Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, June 27, 2011 at the Locust Grove Methodist Church near Farragut, Iowa, with Phil Wing officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home after 6:00 P.M. on Sunday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. Visitation will resume at the Locust Grove Methodist Church near Farragut at 10:00 A.M. on Monday until the time of service. Casket bearers will be John Weider, Tom Troxel, Mike Hamilton, Doug Hayes, Mike McQueen, and Curtis Athen. Honorary casket bearers will be James Sligar, Bob Troxel, don Lauman, Reldon Bryte, and Richard Gruber. Burial will be in the Locust Grove Cemetery.
Born on August 29, 1928 on his family’s farm near Farragut, he was the son of James Russell and Mabel (Swisher) McQueen. He graduated from Farragut High School in 1946 where he played basketball. Following high school he ran his family’s farming operation. Bud was married to Lois Irene Bopp on May 23, 1948 at the Farragut United Methodist Church by Rev. Horace Ireland. The couple farmed and Bud also operated a floor covering business until they moved to Omaha in 1985. He was then employed by Nebraska Furniture Mart for several years until he retired in 2005. Bud and Lois moved to Carroll in 2007. He was a member of the Locust Grove Methodist Church while living near Farragut and he attended the First Presbyterian Church while living in Carroll. He was a Boy Scout in his youth and a 4-H leader as his children grew up. Bud was a member of the South West Iowa Barber Shop Quartet and enjoyed singing and music. He sang for many weddings and funerals over the years. Bud also enjoyed woodworking, square dancing, and Arabian horses.
Surviving are his wife Lois of Carroll; three sons: Dr. James McQueen and his wife Katie of Carroll, Chris McQueen of Windsor, Colorado, and Marc McQueen of Glenwood, Iowa; two grandchildren: Amanda Klein and her husband Andy of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, and Michael McQueen of San Francisco, California; two great grandchildren: Kellen and Neva Klein; two sisters: Isabell Spears of Shenandoah, Iowa, Russine Evans of Brownsburg, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Jean Scotton.
