Alton Francis Stangl (August 14, 1920 - March 18, 2010) Mass of the Christian Burial for Alton Stangl, age 89, of Carroll will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 P.M. on Sunday where there will be a Rosary at 3:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. by Holy Spirit Parish. Music for the Mass will be by the Holy Spirit Choir with Barb Mc Dermott as organist. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Monday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Alton Francis Stangl, age 89, of Carroll, Iowa died at his home on March 18, 2010. Alton was a long time resident of Carroll and a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He was born on August 14, 1920 at Lidderdale, Iowa and was the son of Joseph Henry and Anna Mary (Loneman) Stangl. The family later lived in Breda and Arcadia before moving to Carroll in 1933. He was married to Marian Schmitt on December 27, 1946 in Carroll, Iowa. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, visiting with friends and working in his garden. Alton was a World War II veteran and served in the 2nd Armored Division under the command of General George Patton. He was part of Operation Torch (the African campaign) and landed on the Omaha beachhead as part of the D-Day invasion of Europe. He was also part of the campaigns in the Ardennes, Hedge Rows, Cologne, Aachen, St. Lo and the Battle of the Bulge, to name a few. Alton earned the European/African/Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver and two Bronze Battle Stars. Surviving are his wife Marian of Carroll; the following children and their spouses: Mary and her husband Brad Clark of West Des Moines; Barbara and her husband Mike Moore of Arlington, Texas; and David Stangl and his wife Judy of Arlington, Texas; his grandchildren and spouses: Jennifer (Clark) Bates and her husband Jake Bates; Seth Clark and his wife Megan (Ansley) Clark; Michael Clark and his wife Molly (Shelhamer) Clark; Megan Clark; Ellen Moore and Ethan Stangl; and his Great Grandchildren: Calla Bates; Annaliese Bates and Liam Clark; two sisters: Lavonne O’Conner and Joan Nehman and her husband Don; and two brothers: Ralph Stangl and his wife Jane; and Ivan Stangl and his wife Marlene. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Vincent and a sister Myra.
