Allan John Schmidt

Allan John Schmidt, age 65, of Carroll, Iowa passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Regency Park Care Center in Carroll following a long illness. Born on December 30, 1942 at Iowa City, Iowa, he was the son of Orville and Flora (Latscha) Schmidt. He grew up in Williamsburg, Iowa where he attended St. Paul Lutheran School as a boy and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1960. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in York Township, Iowa County, Iowa on January 27, 1943 and he was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Williamsburg on May 20, 1956. After graduation he attended the State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa where he graduated with a B.A. in mathematics. Allan was married to Shirley Jean Collingwood on October 23, 1965 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He began his teaching career in Ida Grove, also teaching in Osage, Iowa and Mundelein, Illinois. He then earned his masters degree from the University of South Carolina, after which he worked for five years in the private sector. He reentered the education field in Stuart, Nebraska before returning to Iowa where he taught in the Albert City-Truesdale Community Schools for 19 years. They moved to Carroll in 1999 where he taught at Glidden-Ralston School for one year. He enjoyed substitute teaching at the Glidden-Ralston, Carroll-Kuemper, Carroll Public, Ar-We-Va, Coon Rapids, Manning and Southern-Cal Schools. He coached girls softball, volleyball, track, and girls basketball in the schools where he taught. Allan was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll. He enjoyed bowling, crossword puzzles, watching game shows, playing cards and all sorts of games with his family. Surviving are his wife Shirley of Carroll; a son John Schmidt, his wife Diane, and their children Samantha, Betsy, and Michael of Carroll; a son Loren Schmidt, his wife Becky, and their children Sarah and Owen of Bettendorf, Iowa; a sister Joanne Corey and her husband David of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; a brother Robert Schmidt and his wife Diana of Goldfield, Iowa; a brother Dale Schmidt and his wife Deb of Carroll; and his in-laws: Jerry and Jackie Collingwood of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Eldon and Sue Collingwood of Swisher, Iowa, and Linda Schmidt of Williamsburg, Iowa; He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Allan was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Schmidt. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Brian Licht officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery at Williamsburg. Casket bearers will be his nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:00 A.M. on Wednesday to lie in state until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Ellen Severin and the congregation will sing.
