Agnes Louise Best

Agnes Louise Best, age 103, of Glidden passed away on November 6, 2007 at Carroll Health Center in Carroll. Born on August 24, 1904 on the family farm near Glidden, she was the daughter fo Fred and Louise Letzie Best. Agnes spent her childhood on the family farm. She graduated from Glidden High School in 1922. After high school she moved to Chicago where she graduated from Columbia University in 1927. She then taught school in Glenwood for three years. She moved to Iowa City in 1930. She graduated from the University of Iowa where she received her Bachelor of Science degree. She spent the next two years teaching at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. She then received a fellowship to the University of Iowa where she taught eight years at the experimental school and worked towards and received her Masters degree in 1938. After eight years in Iowa city, she moved to Hammond, Indiana and taught for one year. She then moved back to Glidden to care for her mother. She and her mother moved to Denison where she taught for two years. In the Fall of 1947 Agnes moved to Eugene, Oregon where she taught for 22 years. She retired from 40 years of teaching in 1969. Since her retirement she has traveled to Europe six times, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Alaska, the South Pacific, Africa, Japan and many states in the United States. Surviving are several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Bernard and John. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at St. John Lutheran Church in Carroll with Rev. Charles Bichel officiating. Organist for the service will be Mrs. Ellen Severin and the soloists will be Bruce and Paula Addison and Brad Addison singing the Old Rugged Cross, In the Garden, and Amazing Grace. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Friday. Burial will be at Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:00 A.M. on Saturday to lie in state until the time of service. Casket bearers will be Stan Best, Brian Best, Bruce Addison, Brad Addison, Brian Addison, John Best, Kelly Reed and Dan Best.
